Etappe 4: Von Brest nach Homel / From Brest to Gomel (548 km)

Endlose Wälder entlang der Strasse. Nahe bei Tschernobyl.

Wir fahren heute von West nach Ost komplett durch das südliche Belarus. Es geht fast immer gerade aus durch endlose Wälder über mal gute, mal nicht ganz sooo gute Strassen. Einzige Abwechselung: der ein oder andere Storch am Straßenrand. In Homel schaffen wir es zeitlich nur kurz einen Blick auf das Schloß und in die Kathedrale zu werfen.

Homel wurde durch die Tschernobyl-Katastrophe stark getroffen. Der Reaktor ist etwa 150 km Luftlinie entfernt. Heute soll die Belastung aber wieder in einem Bereich sein, der auch langfristig keine Gesundheitsschäden verursacht – einige unserer Mitstreiter ließen trotzdem die Pilze beim Abendessen liegen. Wir haben da weniger Probleme.

Today we crossed the southern part of Belarus from west to east. The road is most of the time dead-straight – garnished by one or the other stork hunting food for its hatchlings. The road condition is sometimes good, sometimes not sooo good. Due to the late arrival in Gomel we only had a short stroll around the palace and a brief look into the cathedral.

Gomel was heavily affected by the catastrophe in Chernobyl. The reactor is just 150 km away. Today radioactive contamination is back to a level which does not cause long-term damages to humans – nevertheless some of our team members avoided the mushrooms during dinner. We did not care.
