Das H4-Abblendlicht des Defenders ist nicht so katastrophal, wie immer behauptet wird, allerdings ist das Fernlicht absolut grottig, was auch partiell an der abenteuerlichen Verkabelung liegt. Der volle Strom von 55 Watt wird nämlich über den Blinkhebel/Lichtschalter geführt. Kein Relais. Zum einen kommt da erst gar nicht alles bei den Scheinwerfern an, was ankommen könnte und sollte und zum anderen brennt der Schalter auch schon einmal gerne durch.
Deshalb und weil LED deutlich länger halten und erschütterungsfest sind, haben wir die komplette Beleuchtung des Fahrzeuges auf LED umgebaut. Blinker und Rücklichter sind nun deutlich heller, was bei den kleinen Durchmessern der Lampen schon von Vorteil ist. Gleiches gilt für das Abblendlicht.
Zwei Probleme: Zum einen zeigt das Abblendlicht an den Rändern ein Ausfransen in alle Regenbogenfarben. Das ist aber kein echtes Problem. Schon schwerwiegender ist die Tatsache, dass die Hauptscheinwerfer nicht mehr genügend Wärme produzieren, um den sich festsetzenden Schnee abzuschmelzen. Bei starken Schneefall setzen sich die Scheinwerfer total zu und man muss im 15-30 Minutentakt anhalten und sie frei kratzen. Eine Heizfolie habe ich bisher leider nicht gefunden.
The H4 head light of the Defender is not as catastrophic as the rumors say. But high beam is a real shame. In addition the cabeling is bizarre. The full power of 55 watts is directed through the head light control. No relay. Said that you can image that not all the power really arrives at the head lights and sometimes the switch blows off.
That’s why we changed all exterior lights to LED. It lasts far longer and is more tolerant for vibrations. Indicators and rear light are now brighter than before. Same is true for the head light.
Two new problems: At the edges the head light shows all colors of the rainbow. But we can live with that. More relevant is the fact that the head light does not produce enough heat to melt the snow. In case of heavy snowfall the headlights are coated by snow and ice and you have to stop every 15-30 minutes and free it up. So far I found no heating film or similar to solve the problem.
