3 Tage bis zum Start / 3 days to the start: Frankfurt – Friedland (240 km)

Es geht los!

Erste Voretappe von Frankfurt nach Friedland. Dort gibt es zum einen das bekannte Grenzdurchgangslager, dass nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg erste Station für viele Flüchtlinge aus dem Osten war.

First pre-stage was from Frankfurt to Friedland, a small village at the former iron curtain known for its refugee camp where after World War II refugees from the east found their first shelter after crossing the border.

“Tor zur Freiheit” / “gateway to freedom”

Zum anderen das Haus Biewald, ein vor drei Jahren recht unverhofft zu Michelin-Ehren gekommenes Restaurant.

Für die Frankfurter Freunde: Der Koch könnte seine Lehre bei Herrn Keim gemacht haben (“Salzen bis an die Grenze – und zur Not mit Zucker abpuffern”).

We had diner at “Haus Biewald”, a restaurant owning a Michelin star for three years now.

Frage: Wie lange dauert die Reise?
Antwort: Fünf Wochen. Wir hoffen am 9.7. in Peking den Flieger in Richtung Frankfurt besteigen zu können.

Frage: Werdet ihr auch auf Instagram oder anderen sozialen Medien posten?
Antwort: Nein. Wir werden uns auf diesen auf WordPress basierenden Blog fokussieren, da wir auch Menschen, die nicht so Social Media-affin sind, das Mitlesen ermöglichen wollen.

Frage: Warum heißt die Website “Äppelwoi-Express”?
Antwort: Wir stammen zwar aus Dortmund (“Nur der BVB!”), aber Frankfurt ist nach mehr als zwanzig Jahren unsere zweite Heimat und der Apfelwein ist das Nationalgetränk in und rund um Frankfurt.

Frage: Hört sich ja cool an, aber ist das Urlaub?
Antwort: Klares Jaein. Vermutlich wird es nicht immer ein Spaziergang werden und manchmal richtiger Streß, aber aus vergangenen Urlauben wissen wir, dass wir diese Art der Reise sehr entspannend und interessant finden.

Frage: Warum habt ihr euch ausgerechnet für dieses Auto entschieden und wie genau habt ihr es vorbereitet?

Frage: Was habt ihr alles mitgenommen?
Antwort: Auch dazu wird es in den nächsten Wochen mehrere Artikel geben.

Q: How long will the trip take?
A: Five weeks. We hope to board the airplane to Frankfurt in Beijing July 9th.

Q: Will you also post on Instagram or other social media?
A: No. We will focus on this WordPress-based blog, because we want to give followers a chance who are not so social media-savvy.

Q: Why do you name the web site “Aeppelwoi-Express”?
F: We are born in Dortmund (“BVB forever!“), but Frankfurt is after more than 20 years our second hometown and the apple wine, called “Äppelwoi”, “Ebbelwei” or “Äppler” is the favorite drink in and around Frankfurt.

Q: Sounds cool, but is this really a vacation?
A: Yes and no. Not each day will be a breeze and sometimes it will be certainly stressful, but we know from the recent vacations we like this kind of travel and are able to relax.

Q: Why did you choose that car and how exactly did you prepare it?
F: Please expect a couple of posts answering this question in detail over the next weeks.

Kriegsbemalung / Raggery

CreativZwo bei der Arbeit / CreativZwo at work

Eine Woche vor Start wurden von CreativZwo die Aufkleber aufgebracht. Neben den Startnummern sind dies insbesondere zwei Karten der Route: Rechts in deutsch, links in russisch und chinesisch. Das gibt uns die Möglichkeit den meisten Menschen, die wir auf der Route treffen werden, zu erklären, was wir machen.

Der Service von CreativZwo war erstklassig! Nach einem spontanen Anruf um 15 Uhr an einem Freitag wurde das Fahrzeug noch am selben Abend um 18:30 Uhr beklebt! Einfach klasse! Danke.

Ein grosses Dankeschön geht auch an meine beiden Kolleginnen Yana (Frankfurt) und Lily (Taipeh), die meine mit Hilfe von Wikipedia übersetzte Karte  qualitätsgesichert haben – Danke!

One week before the start CreativZwo attached the rally stickers to “the fat one”. In addition to the unavoidable bib numbers we ordered two maps of the route: On the right in German, on the left in Russian and Chinese, giving us the chance to explain what we are doing to the people we will meet along the route.

The service provided by CreativZwo was first class! I reached out to them very spontaneous on a Friday afternoon at 3 pm and on the same evening at 7 pm  the job was done. Excellent. Thank you!

Das Fahrzeug / The vehicle

Die Fahrzeugwahl für die Reise läßt eine gewisse Spleenigkeit erkennen – sonst hätten sie sich nicht für einen Land Rover Defender entschieden, dem unzuverlässigsten Auto der Welt (Jeremy Clarkson). “Der Dicke” wurde ein wenig umgebaut, so dass er jetzt hoffentlich den Färnissen der Reise einigermaßen gewachsen ist. Von Komfort soll hier keine Rede sein, auch wenn ein Kühlschrank für die notwendigsten Essens- und Weinvorräte an Bord ist.

Their choice of car shows a certain amount of eccentricity – nothing else can explain the fact that they picked a Land Rover Defender as their Overland Vehicle. Jeremy Clarkson called it the most unreliable car in the world. That is why “The Fat One” received some serious improvements to master the upcoming challenges. While comfort is certainly not a predominant characteristic of the car, an integrated fridge with an emergency inventory of food and wine will hopefully relax some of the undeniable drawbacks.

Das Team / The team

Anja und Dirk (beide noch weit unter 50), stemmen sich in ihren Jobs in Frankfurt täglich mit aller Kraft gegen die nächste weltweite Finanzkrise. Ihren kärglichen Lohn investieren sie in Essen+Trinken, Autos und nicht zuletzt Reiseaktivitäten in bisher rund 60 Länder in aller Welt.

Die Reise von Hamburg nach Peking ist die erste von drei geplanten transkontinentalen Touren. Irgendwann werden Transafrika und die Panamericana folgen.

Anja and Dirk (both considerably under 50), do a lot of heavy-lifting in their Frankfurt based jobs to thwart the next global financial crises. They invest their scanty income into food+drink, cars and travel activities – with approximately 60 visited countries so far.

The journey from Hamburg to Beijing is the first out of three transcontinental adventures planned. Trans Africa and Panamericana will follow sometime.
